The Wynn Hospital Ribbon Cutting took place on Sunday and the hospital will officially open on October 29.
UTICA, N.Y. — The ribbon-cutting celebration for the new Wynn Hospital in Downtown Utica took place on Sunday, Oct. 15.
Mohawk Valley Health System broke ground on the over $600 million project back in December of 2019. Nearly four years later, the 702,000 square-foot hospital is officially set to open on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 6 a.m.
Many local and state politicians were in attendance including New York State Governor Kathy Hochul.
“This is a huge win for this community, and I want to thank all the people who made this happen because this is a milestone in our community’s history and all the people who wrote off the Mohawk Valley,” Hochul said. “I want to thank the people who never gave up on this community. The true believers, our elected leaders, the community patrons, the people who just love this community so dearly. The Mohawk Valley and Utica have so much to offer, so much.”
“Come on Utica, let’s get this party started,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
The Wynn Hospital benefactor is Steve Wynn, whose foundation donated $50 million toward the construction of New York State’s newest hospital.
Wynn was in attendance and had a smile on his face the entire celebration, noting that his mother and father would be floating on joy if they were alive to see the hospital.
“I’m really happy to be here today,” Steve Wynn said.
“There’s nothing like it anywhere at this time, except in Utica, N.Y.,” Wynn said. “Each of us that live in this community and love living here are going to have to remember to take personal responsibility in some way, even if it’s small, to keep this hospital and its promise.”
MVHS President Darlene Stromstad also spoke to the hundreds of people in attendance.
“We will honor you by making a promise that we will work everyday as hard as we can to be the best healthcare facility that you all deserve,” Darlene Stromstad said.
“Remember everyone, this hospital was built through COVID. Through the isolation and shut down of COVID,” She said. “The material shortages and workforce shortages, and still since December of 2020 we have kept this project on time and on budget.”
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente also took the time to thank everyone involved with the project.
“This facility and these people are leading us into the very best of our future,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said.
“As history teaches us, and as the saying goes, what I said here will not be remembered years from today, but what has been built here, and the individuals and families that pass through here, will be honored for many lifetimes,” Picente said.
