On Tuesday night, Transylvania County stakeholders met with an independent monitor for HCA Healthcare, the group that has owned Transylvania Regional Hospital since 2019.

HCA has 15 commitments that fall under the scope of the independent monitor, including retention of services and hospitals, investment in facilities and community health and well-being among others.

However, it was largely the issues that fell outside the scope of the independent monitor that concerned the dozens of people in Brevard on Tuesday night.

“There’s no question that the quality of medical care that’s available to us has diminished greatly since HCA took over Mission,” Kathleen Barnes said.

“I’m sure you’re going to refer us to others because it doesn’t work going through the independent monitor to address these questions,” Mark Weinstein said. “Different questions, sure.”

Gibbins Advisors, the independent monitor, will next head to Mission Hospital in Buncombe County. That meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
